Review of Stone (2010) by Dc E — 07 Feb 2012
"Stone" 10 Scale Rating: 4.0 (Bad) ...
When I saw this movie on NetFlix, I wondered how I had never heard of it before. Milla Jovovich. Robert DeNiro. Edward Norton. I wasn't sure how this one flew under the radar. After watching it, I can only assume that everyone involved decided that it was best to pretend like this movie never happened.
"Stone" is about a soon to be retiring parole officer (DeNiro) who is trying to finish up the last of his cases. A convicted arsonist, who goes by the nickname of Stone (Norton), decides to play mind games to influence the officer into letting him out of jail. He sets up his wife on the outside (Jovavich) to seduce the officer, who eventually succumbs to her charms.
For starters, Norton was amazing. People like his character in real life annoy me to no end and Stone was no different, but it was an amazing performance all the same. DeNiro and Jovavich were great as well, which is why this movie was so disappointing.
Halfway through what was at the very least a decent movie, it takes an odd turn that was baffling. Out of the blue, the movie becomes spiritual and stops making sense. I'm not sure what the movie's actual message was, but they did a poor job of conveying it. Before this odd turn occurs, the movie was only above average as it was and could not rebound.
Great performances, but a poor script.
