Review of Stomp the Yard (2007) by Jodie W — 19 Sep 2009
Fraternities. Stepping. F'ing awesome.
I really liked that his love for dancing was turned into something positive, and that the main character didn't give in to his struggles, no matter what. I've also always appreciated the brother and sisterhood of cultural fraternities. There's always a feeling of closeness that goes beyond the money and superficialities of historically white ones. Cultural ones tend to focus on history and their roots with a sense of pride, and that was definitely depicted though the dancing in this movie without coming off as conceit or elitism.
