Review of Stoker (2013) by Emmanuel S — 25 Jun 2013
You had me at "disturbing violence". If you've seen any of director Chan Wook Park's films you know you're in for a bit of a mind*uck. My personal faves of Park's are Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, so I was curious to see how his work would translate for an American/English-speaking/unwilling to read subtitles audience.
It's a disturbing, psychological thriller which is Park's modus operandi, but the story fell short of the visceral shock and awe that his earlier films from his native Korea evoked in this viewer.
Still a worthy rental if you enjoy the genre, but glad I skipped it in the theatre.
