Review of Stoker (2013) by Kallum S — 07 Jan 2015
It's a family affair...and one that will linger in your mind for a long time.
Stoker is directed by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy), and is his first English language film. The themes are suited particularly well with Chan-wook, as you will probably gather if you've seen his previous work. Wentworth Miller wrote this gothic tale of a girl who meets her uncle for the first time, at her fathers funeral. For a writing debut, this is impressive. Stoker is one big question mark from the beginning, and the question; what am I watching?
Stoker is gorgeous with every scene. The colours and set pieces compliment the dark tones and intense, bloody imagery that's presented like a feast to gorge.
As for this ticking, hyper violent thriller, it's made by incredibly twisted performances. Stand out to Mia Wasikowski, who creates the secluded, strange coming of age protagonist. What fails is the flawed script, which really doesn't to justice of such sick, bonkers characters.
Chan-wook is in his dark and deranged element.
