Review of Stoker (2013) by Emma D — 18 Jul 2013
"Stoker" is a disturbing and creepily good time. At first glance, it seems like a loose adaptation of Hitchcock's "Shadow of a Doubt", but it's much deeper than that. Mia Wasikowska is chillingly stoic as India Stoker - it's hard to get a read on her.
Does she like walking amongst the shadows? Does she enjoy being the outcast? Enter Uncle Charlie (the same name Joseph Cotten had in "Shadow of a Doubt"). He too walks along the outskirts of society.
He "nurtures" India; shapes her into his ideal... uh... mate. There's certainly an unconscious connection between the two. The question is: Will India embrace that connection or reject it? Perhaps she does both.
Perhaps both accepting and rejecting her uncle, India develops into the stone-cold killer she was destined to be... We're a long way off from the Oscar race here, and what a shame. Matthew Goode deserves recognition as Uncle Charlie.
