Review of Stoker (2013) by N S — 22 Jan 2014
Weird. Very (pause....) weird. Creepy story with lots of moody characters, Stoker dresses like a horror film but underneath the moodiness, lies a disturbed family drama... a very disturbed family. Mia Wasikowska is very good in the role, bringing just enough emotion in the right spots, but keeping her character consistent throughout. Matthew Goode is very creepy and slimy, clearly enjoying his characters mysterious ways. Kidman puts in a solid performance, but is she slightly too stiff?
Whilst the cinematography is very good, and there is great creative flair, especially in transitions. However, there is too much style and some of it is distracting, and some of it bogs down the plot as we wait whilst the camera lingers and slowly focuses in on Wasikowska, a long way of showing an establishing shot.
Those looking for a real slasher flick will be disappointed, but if you're looking for a film with a bit of depth and mystery, this might suit.
