Review of Stoic (2009) by David H — 08 May 2010
Another Uwe Boll film, another piece of cinematic excretion besmirching the good name of cinema, right? Actually, "Stoic" is something of a departure from the norm - intense, intriguing and involving.
Showing how easy it is for non-violent men to turn violent incaptivity, the story of a poker game in a prison cell that spirals out of control into torture, humiliation, rape and murder, is only for the strong of stomach and the enquiring mind - there are no easy answers here, but a breakdown of basic humanity (or perhaps a demonstration of it).
And Boll makes sure we're in theat tight cell for the entirity of the ordeal - there's no escape from the atrocities. Bold, bleak and shocking stuff, though perhaps the most appalling thing is how bad Edward Furlong looks nowadays.
