Review of Stir of Echoes (1999) by Senthil M — 21 Jun 2008
I liked it and thought it was pretty well made for a Supernatural thriller. Kevin Bacon does a good job in this and David Koepp shows that he is a good director.
James Newton Howard's score is also pretty good when its used. This movie is 90 mins of entertainment but its appeal would not hold up again in 2nd or 3rd viewings.
I wished the film was longer and spent more time exploring Kevin Bacon's character - his character felt 2 - dimensional even though he could have easily been 3-dimensional. For example, there are a lot of hints that Kevin Bacon's character's "mission" in this movie is akin to a mid-life crisis. However, Koepp does not explore this quality of the character fully.
However, almost all of David Koepp's scripts sacrifice characterization for plot (ex: Spider-Man, 4th Indiana Jones film, etc..), so it was not that surprising that the same happened here. His only movie where he does a good job with characterization is Al Pacino's "Carlito's Way".
