Review of Stir of Echoes (1999) by Dale W — 28 Apr 2010
I have come to realize lately that I have a thing for ghost movies. They are kind of like my junk food of movies, and I enjoy watching them when I'm not in the mood to challenge myself with more enlightening and worldly films.
Well, this movie is kind of like a more sophisticated kind of junk food, as it actually kicks a fair amount of ass. It kind of reminds me of Mystic River for some reason - not only because Kevin Bacon is in it, but also because of the general atmosphere and direction of the film, and the very similar setting.
It is jarring, suspenseful and effective even in the context of it not being THAT original or anything. The acting is well done, there are a decent amount of shocks and gory moments, and it actually has teeth, lashing out at the viewer instead of trying to be insightful or too emotive.
It's a well done horror movie that I wouldn't be averse to seeing again. Recommended.
