Review of Stir of Echoes (1999) by Victor D — 29 May 2008
Considered by many as the working man's "Sixth Sense", this David Koepp directed film is a great murder mystery, suspenseful ghost story painted with tight and moody strokes. Koepp has been writing for many years now and he gladly accepts (according to the commentary which is great too) the advice of Brian DePalma and Steven Spielberg on how to deftly unravel this ghostly detective story.
Based on the novel by twilight zone scribe Richard(I am Legend) Matheson, the film actually improves on the novel and adds great character development. Bacon turns in a good and accurate performance as a Chicago Telephone worker facing the supernatural entities that cloud up his life even more than it is already.
This movie can stand alone up to any of M. Night's weird chillers. Good score by Newton Howard as well. And the kid is a bit scary to watch as he talks too and communicates with dead people as well.
Kevin Dunn turns in a sympathetic performance as a hard, pushy football dad and neighbor.
