Review of Stir of Echoes (1999) by Patrick E — 24 Mar 2010
Stir of Echoes is an excellent horror mystery with effective imagery throughout and an imaginative plot. Very much in the same vein as Asian ghost stories, the film has an eerie atmosphere throughout and an excellent performance from Kevin Bacon in the lead role.
The plot revolves around Kevin Bacons' character who is hypnotised at a party by his wives sister. From that night on begins to see strange things, including a girl that begins to haunt his mind. He quickly becomes infatuated with finding out what happened to the girl. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout and surprisingly the ending isn't predictable at all. The main plus point of the film is chilling imagery that Bacons character experiences. The jump scenes are very effective but will also leave you with chills. The plot is gripping and moves along at a fast pace and it's all wonderfully directed by David Koepp.
It's rare these days to get a horror film with a strong and original story but Stir of Echoes has both and turns out to be a very entertaining and chilling ghost story. Recommended.
