Review of Still Alice (2014) by Shawn P — 13 May 2015
This movie is hopelessly sad to watch. I can't imagine trying to live with something that slowly takes away who you are, memories, intelligence, existence, everything. If you know anyone with Alzheimer's this movie will be really hard for you to watch.
Thinking back to vague memories of my grandfather not recognizing me, calling me other cousins, yelling and swearing in fits of confusion was triggered watching this and I broke down. Julianne Moore of course plays this role to perfection.
I will say I expected the ending to go a different way (you will understand when you watch it) and I kind of wish it did only because I don't think anyone should have to live with this after they literally loose their memory completely.
People can judge and say suicide is a coward's way out, well this isn't living, and you should be able to have the choice to die with dignity. It's not about how long you live, It's the quality of life you can have while on this planet.
I don't think I could watch this movie again, it's too sad, but I do think everyone should watch it once to fully understand and see the devastating effects Alzheimer's has on everyone.
