Review of Still Alice (2014) by Ian C — 05 Jul 2015
"Still Alice" is the sort of film one feels almost obliged to like. It features an acting Tour De Force by it's star Julianne Moore, it deals with the tragic effects of Alzheimer's Disease on the individual and their family, and it is based on a best selling book.
The screenplay is solid and the supporting actors are all faultless. So why did I find it so very unremarkable and so predictable and why did I leave the cinema so unmoved? Much has to do with the subject itself; so much has been written and spoken about this awful disease that one hopes that a movie like this will provide a fresh insight into its ravages but it basically tells you everything you already know.
Plus so many movies nowadays are aimed squarely at the heartstrings that the audience sometimes becomes 'all cried out' from seeing so much abject misery and tragedy on the screen. If only someone, somewhere would write a genuinely good comedy but, alas, it seems that is a lost art!
