Review of Still Alice (2014) by Paul E — 18 Sep 2015
This film hurt my heart. It was so devastating and eye-opening. Julianne Moore deserved the Best Actress Oscar for it. I truly believed she was falling into the depths of Alzheimer's when I was watching it.
She was so emotional and real. Of course, Kristen Stewart borderline ruined every scene she was in. She displayed her typical "acting" of shaking, stuttering, gasping, and biting her lip. There was a particularly heartbreaking scene where Julianne Moore describes what it's like to have Alzheimer's, and Kristen Stewart responds with, "That sounds terrible," like someone had just described what it was like to stub their toe.
Her whole delivery from facial expression (or lack thereof) and voice inflection (or lack thereof) was just absent and uncaring. In the movie she plays an aspiring actress who is a terrible actor. I'm assuming that though.
What I'm assuming was her "terrible" acting performances were exactly the same as her portrayal in the rest of the film, so I can't be sure. Alec Baldwin and the rest of the actors that play Julianne Moore's family more than make up for Kristen Stewart's appalling performance though.
They really display a supportive family desperately trying to help someone, but suffering themselves at the same time. If you can look past Kristen Stewart, I highly recommend seeing this. I got emotional more than once.
It gives an honest, heartfelt, realistic depiction of descending into the grips of a horrible illness, and desperately trying to hold on to yourself, and a family's attempt to do the same.
