Review of Still Alice (2014) by Jonathan B — 04 Oct 2015
Julianne Moore really doesn't put a foot wrong in this moving portrayal of a woman facing early-onset Alzheimer's disease. She really nails the character and situation. In fact the whole movie is beautiful, moving and thought provoking without ever becoming sensationalist or maudlin.
he subject matter, though at times difficult to watch, is handled with great care and sensitivity. The viewer is taken on a journey with Alice and her family as they recognise something isn't quite right, deal with the news of the diagnosis, cope and at times fail to cope with the progress of the disease.
There is a real dignity to Alice and she is shown as both strong and determined but gradually, as the disease takes hold, she becomes more vulnerable and her family have to take on her day to day care.
The beauty of this movie is that all along, we never lose sight of who Alice is or was. The film is factual, moving and sincere. The script and dialogue are completely believable and natural and every member of the cast, especially Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin give there all to create a really memorable movie.
