Review of Stevie (2003) by Jay _ — 07 Jan 2005
Where: DVD from library.
One line review: Difficult and disturbing, but very good.
Stevie is a documentary by Steve James (Hoop Dreams) where he returns to rural Southern Illinois to find out what happened to the boy (Stevie) he used to be a big brother too. This documentary is very well done, but also very hard to watch at points.
Sometimes it feels very Jerry Springeresque, as we watch this 26 year old messed up rural screwball and the in-fighting that happens in his family. But it takes a much more serious turn when serious allegations are made against Stevie that he molested his cousin.
It is very much on the long side (2.5 hours), but it is gripping. You come to care for Stevie even though it is impossible to accept his actions.
