Review of Steve Jobs (2015) by Ankur B — 08 Jan 2016
Aaron Sorkin is the guiding light that elevates Steve Jobs beyond being a mildly amusing biopic hindered by some overly-cutesy directorial flairs that have become irritatingly prevalent in Boyle's later work.
His screenplay is excellent, using a fresh set-up based around three product launches that both avoids the dull chronological narrative that is so often done incorrectly and allows the audience to get a sense of the type of person Jobs was with a minimal amount of expositionary backstory.
The dialogue is consistently brilliant, zinger after zinger flying from the mouths of the characters in such a way that it comes off as merely impressive as opposed to sanctimonious or overwrought (see The Newsroom).
In his hands, Steve Jobs becomes the kind of Oscar-bait that actually delivers, a thrilling biopic and a great piece of filmmaking that earns the awards talk it received before even being released.
