Review of Stepmom (1998) by Jenna G — 29 Apr 2010
An A-List tear jerker!! Susan Sarandon steals the show as the epitomy of the perfect mother. Everything her ex-husband's new girlfriend is not. She's on time, all the time, and carries a pharmacy around in her handbag.
But when she finds out she's dying of cancer, things change. Julia Roberts also holds her own as the new "step mum" (note the correct spelling), learning about having to be a mother, when she never wanted kids in the first place.
Their relationship is the center of this fiasco, and they each learn some pretty hard lessons about life. Ed Harris also plays an amazing father figure, to his credit. Though I prefer him in a fedora carrying a weapon of some kind, he's really achieved something different in this film.
A drama not to be missed, and an achievemnt of film in the 1990s, this movie will make you laugh, cry, and make you reevaluate what are true treasures in this life. Bring the tissues!
