Review of Step Up Revolution (2012) by Jiana W — 17 Feb 2013
Really, if you've seen one, you've seen them all. The plot is as thin as paper and as predictable as they come. It tries to be a little more story-driven. As a result, there seems to be a little less dancing (to me) than in the previous 2. Some of the dance sequences are very creative and cool, like the one in the art museum and the one at the end.
The biggest mistake this movie made was limiting Adam Sevani (aka, "Moose") to just a cameo. He's a phenomenal dancer and it's fun to watch him. He also has a charismatic screen persona, even if he isn't the best actor. But then again, none of the people here are really great actors anyway. This time around they aren't as horrible as they have been (Step Up 2 and 3). But the characters are just so one-dimensional. You don't care about their plight. You don't care if Sean and Emily get back together. You don't even care if they keep their home, which you know is going to happen in the end anyway.
One of the main characters ("Emily") apparently is a "So You Think You Can Dance" alum. I *thought* that girl looked familiar. Anyways, like I said, there's nothing new here. It's weak and a bit lazy that the plot is driven by the characters getting Youtube hits. It's predictable. But you don't really watch these movies for depth or acting ability. You watch them for sweet-looking, innovative dance sequences and head bob-worthy music. Now that, this movie delivers on. Although I could do without the excessive dubstep remixes that plagued the soundtrack this time around.
