Review of Step Up All In (2014) by Greg B — 08 Aug 2014
"Step Up: All In" is the realization of a dance team's dream to make it big in the business. There is certainly entertainment value to this movie and a lot of enjoyable dance scenes. I also applaud the movie for its creativity.
However, the characters are flat and don't really do anything other than move from one set piece to another. There is nothing compelling or meaningful about the characters or their stories. They're simply there to dance, and we are never sufficiently provided with a backstory.
This movie has the bane of being highly entertaining but quickly forgettable on a character level. When a movie is executed well, the characters leave an impression on you, either in a good or bad way.
These characters will not leave an impression on you, and they may have been able to if more competent actors were at the helm. As far as dance movies go, it's certainly not the worst ever made, but this movie doesn't really do anything to stand out either.
If you pay to see this in the theaters, do it for the dance routines and don't go in expecting great acting or a great script ------------------------------------------- C+.
