Review of Step Up (2006) by Red W — 28 Jun 2010
A much better 'film' than its more street dance heavy Step Up 2, but nowhere near as good a 'dance' film.
The dance and musical numbers bordered on boring at times, but there was more class and a more interesting if not simplified narrative. For fans of dance movies this may be a let down but as a film it works with a simple but direct and formulaic story and character arch.
Not Shakespeare by any stretch of the imagination but there was a gentle touch and clear care for the work. Just a pity there the numbers often seemed to be uninspired. There were exceptions, with the most notable being the dance club sequence.
Sound mixing was spot on though and overall worth a watch but I think that the subject of street dance simply doesn't need anything more than a plot line to get by. Just step up and bring it on...
