Review of Step Up 2: The Streets (2008) by Jessica H — 08 Sep 2014
Usually I don't care much for dancing movies, but this one surprisingly caught my attention, kept it, and I enjoyed it even. Usually I don't like characters in dancing or singing movies because they are either portrayed as so much of an underdog that you just KNOW they will hit it big. It's so fake. Or they are portrayed as overbearing and cocky. Now this movie I think treated the underdog aspect nicely. I liked how seemingly non-talented kids, whom no one really noticed (not dogged on or anything, just not noticed) come together and achieve great things. The main character, Andie, had major issues and was rebellious and broken, and I liked how she grew to be a team player, SPOILER---moved from being on a team of selfish, mean-spirited teens (and her friend eventually left to join her also, which was awesome), to one at her new school full of quiet, talented kids with potential, heart, and a caring spirit. The main guy, I'm not sure if I cared too much for him. I didn't really feel him, and I didn't find him all that cute (sorry! So shallow lol). They did have some chemistry though. Adam, who played Moose was an amazing dancer, had an infectious personality that I loved, and he was so adorable.
The dancing was awesome, some dances were better than others, while a slight few left much to be desired, but in all, they all were satisfying.
In short, character development was there, dancing was there, some core values that always feel nice, like friendship, working hard and never giving up, the nice guys finish last, teamwork, a little romance (maybe a lot, but that didn't overshadow other movie plot elements) and punishment for wrongdoing was even brought up, so a sense of justice was there.
This is the only dance movie I have, so that says much, I love it. :).
