Review of Step Sisters (2018) by Stephonae T — 20 Feb 2018
This movie was horribly written with 2D character arcs. I saw the trailer and was not impressed. I was wrestled into watching it upon several "it's cute" recommendations.
The entire movie reduced the black female characters to race baiters rather than holistic beings genuinely holding people accountable for cultural appropriation. The mockery of racism, microagressions, and pro-black means anti-white sentiment was real. The Theta's make-up is a theft of several prominent black sororities. The SBB reduces every component of panhellenic greek life to drinking, disorganized, gossipers. Even in the worst chapters, there are strict rules on meeting conduct and attire. The whole movie was comparable of what Vampires Suck is to Twilight, for Step Sisters to Stomp the Yard.
Furthermore, it is grotesque to watch a black woman work her butt off to get into Harvard, only to be "saved" by a gay white man - after he uses her for his own agenda that is. She has to give up her involvement in her sorority to appease a Dean for a letter of recommendation to Harvard. All because her parents won't sign one ("You need to build your own legacy, not ride on ours" - wtf).
