Review of Step Brothers (2008) by Jeffrey G — 13 Aug 2012
What a study in wasted potential. What a cast! I was worried--Richard Jenkins is a PRO. I thought the man could play that role straight enough to make me cackle out loud and lose my bet....but then the film began.
I smiled once or twice, but this film eschews EVERYTHING that gives it the possibility of greatness to play to the lowest common denominator of Idiot Comedy. The wife laughed once (at 29:53) at the "fake abs" of Derek.
She was ashamed by the end of the film. At 1:10:14, both myself and the wife declared the film"endless". We were BEGGING for it to end. We both decided the BEST part was at 1:17:22, when we noticed a girl wearing a "Helicopter Hat" in the background of the frame.
That's how sad this was. There were so many moments that would have been HILARIOUS...had they not been surrounded by idiotic, potty humor and infantile banter. A sad, sad waste of potential, casting and concept.
I think I owe the kid that rented this for me her money back.
