Review of Step Brothers (2008) by Craig B — 30 Dec 2014
STEP BROTHERS, the third collaboration between director Adam McKay and comedian Will Farrell, is the story of two live-at-home forty-somethings (Will Farrell and John C. Reilly) who find themselves having to share a house when their parents unexpectedly marry. I loved the premise for this film, and after enjoying ANCHOR MAN and TALLADEGA NIGHTS, I saw no reason why this movie wouldn't join their ranks.
Unfortunately, STEP BROTHERS is distinctly unimpressive. It isn't bad. It just isn't good, and it's hard for me to determine where it goes wrong. The jokes are funny, the timing is fine, the supporting cast is capable, but the result is lukewarm. Perhaps it's a little more predictable than the previous two films, or maybe I've just grown accustomed to the kind of comedy McKay and Farrell produce.
