Review of Steamboy (2004) by Robert S — 17 Oct 2008
Steampunk is a genre that is easy to hint at but hard to pull off. A world of hot-water automatons and airships that is both majestic and real is a tough nut to crack, but Otomo Katsuhiro's next foray into the silver screen pulls it off.
Though the story is essentially just Victorian Akira, a young troublemaker caught in the midst of technology that could make or break the world, Otomo's vision cannot be discounted. When you see Ray Steam jet away in a one-wheel motorcycle you're riding sidecar with him.
See this movie, and then read Akira. you'll see what Otomo was getting at.
