Review of Steamboy (2004) by Ian W — 03 Mar 2009
Steamboy represents everything that I tend to dislike about anime. The movie features an interesting setting, and some potentially workable characters, but after the first action sequence it quickly devolves into a tedious and pretentious bore.
The screenplay is simply canabalized from other, better, Katsuhiro Otomo films and even the technical qualities (by Sunrise Inc. - an unlikely studio to helm a major theatrical anime project) seem underwhelming.
The movie was reportedly cut by twenty minutes for the American theatrical release. That probably would've been a blessing.
