Review of Stay (2005) by Tim B — 11 Jun 2010
Took me a long time before I watched this one. There wasn't any particular reason I kept putting it off, the opportunity just never arose. I definitely wasn't disappointed. The synopsis on this one's page states the plot very well.
The terror and slight confusions just kept rising in my head and I couldn't shake the movie for a while afterwards. The repeat events, the INSANELY kinetic visuals and so on made sure that I didn't take my eyes off of this nightmare.
Marc Foster should've been given an award here. The editing was well done, the atmosphere was hypnotic and the imagery was eye popping. Sheer brilliance. Of course, the film was about more than just looking good.
The storyline drew me in big time. Its depressive aura was something I could relate to and I must admit, choked me up once or twice. The great acting helped seal the deal for me. I like Ewan McGregor.
Not many others I know do but he's got that charm that just makes me like him. He was very good again here. This was the movie that made me really get into Ryan Gosling. His brooding and monologues were flawless, yet I still felt huge sympathy for the guy.
Excellent. Naomi Watts looked gorgeous and shined through her few scenes. Alas, although the movie did move me, I can't say it really stuck with me long afterwards. The whole thing just felt a tad familiar and nothing really surprised me here.
I also had a slight confusion with some characters around the ending. Aam I just an idiot or was the revolution here kind of useless? In the end, though, I can safely say this movie was well worth my time.
It moved me, sported great acting and a virtually amazing experience. The ending may not be the greatest, but I still don't shun it for that.
