Review of Stay (2005) by Monica G — 18 Jun 2011
An ambitious film that doesn't quite live up to its potential...
From the opening scenes of this film it is very clear that this is not a straight forward tale and that subtext is everything. There is a very cold almost clinical feel throughout the film as the story progresses. The way that the scenes are edited together (cross fades and dissolves) make it an unsettling and sometimes confusing expereince as McGregor's shrink attempts to help Gosling's character. The atmospehere created within this film is pretty intense and was probably the best thing here, its very effective.
Cast wise, everyone is fine, McGregor still can't do a convincing american accent but it doesn't really matter, everyone aquits themselves well. When the story pulls together towards the end is where the problems begin as it becomes a little underwhelming which is a shame.
All told this is a really unusual and thoughtful film which has wonderful visuals and a great soundtrack/sound design. Just a shame that the actual story itself doesn't reach the heights of its aspirations.
