Review of Stay (2005) by Snigdh J — 30 Jul 2011
First thing that strikes you about "Stay" is how entirely different it is from other works of Marc Foster, from lovely "Finding Neverland" to average ones like "Monster Ball" or "Stranger than Fiction". There is a deep contrast in style & approach here almost as if certain David Lynch grew over him as he came across the script. You don't at all mind that though because result is an exciting piece of work that keeps you on edge for all the 98 minutes. Foster consistently plays with the identities of the lead characters bending your sense of time & space. He accompanies it with a moody sort of camera work as angled, twisted shots constantly make you aware of the fragility of the obvious proceedings.
McGregor excels and is ably supported by Watts & Gosling. But really you would like to remember this movie for it's atmospheric quality & twisted narrative style Foster brings in and in spite of the fact that you detect Lynch lurking around somewhere, it's a brave attempt.
