Review of Staten Island Summer (2015) by Reggie M — 08 Aug 2015
If only it were as fun to watch as it clearly was to film, this might be destined for cult status the likes of Wet Hot American Summer. Unfortunately it's like an over-salted version of the kind of film that came out monthly in the 80s. It's not so much that we mind cliche's, as an audience, but we do mind when we're expected to fill in the gaps as characters make their wholly predictable choices. This film is essentially Superbad, without any of the emotional insights contained in that film... penned primarily by Seth Rogen.
And is it really kosher to call a movie taking place over, like, 2 or 3 days, "Staten Island Summer?".
I love this cast of SNL folks, but I feel like these guys lost a bet or something. They keep gamely showing up for the worst movies. Fingers crossed for the new Ghostbusters...
Full disclosure: I gave up in the final 20 minutes or so. Maybe gets really awesome in that last 20 minutes.
