Review of State and Main (2000) by Cory B — 08 Feb 2009
A hilarious little small-town comedy from one of my most loathed director/writers, David Mamet. This gave me a change of heart. Top notch cast, pitch-perfect timing, and some great, great lines combine for one hell of a film.
I love films with 'hidden' elements like the case in Pulp Fiction and the envelope in The Departed, to name a few. In this, the film crew has to move to a new town because of some unknown reason in which the town is holding one of their set pieces hostage.
Philip Seymour Hoffman's character inquires about the situation, and it is whispered to him; he shudders. Moments like that are abound in this extremely engrossing flick, as well as some extremely memorable lines.
Check it out if you like 'film within a film' movies.
