Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by Troy D — 24 Apr 2008
LOVED THIS FILM! I don't know if it's the burgeoning sentimentalist be awoken in me or what. Frank Langella is fully immersed in this character delivering a very vulnerable, raw and nuanced performance.
There are so many small great scenes captured involving Langella and Ambrose or the coffee shop meeting between Lili Taylor and Adrian Lesters characters are spot on. If you are looking for the classic Hollywood saccharine solution you're evening is best served elsewhere.
If you like sharp, smart, literary work without compromise this is it. It begins as it ends with that solemn focused stare at the typewriter then the sound of those keys being punched - Perfection.
