Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by Richard F — 30 Jun 2008
Like "Away from Her" and "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man", this film suffers from Lionsgate's amateurish production style. Like those movies, this plays like a made for TV movie on the Lifetime channel at times.
Other times it feels like an episode of the "Larry Sanders Show" or "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Moreover, supporting cast is comprised of members of the cast of "Six Feet Under", adding to the HBO flavour.
Once I lowered my cinematic standards and stopped focusing on the overlit sets, I could finally delve into what is a somewhat interesting character study, albeit the themes are not necessarily resounding here.
Bottom line, this film does not live up to the rave reviews it undeservingly received.
