Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by Alec H — 10 Jul 2008
An excellent performance and a rare star turn by Frank Langella is counterbalanced by a dreadful one by the usually reliable Lauren Ambrose in this mild-mannered literary drama. The movie moves into some unexpected territory and is an interesting character study, but at the end of the day, the only reason to see it is to see a master like Langella doing some superb work in the twilight of his career.
Lauren Ambrose, woefully miscast, barely registers. Still, supporting performances by Lili Taylor and Adrian Lester add a bit of truth to the proceedings.
