Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by Julia T — 20 Jul 2008
I suspect the book was better, as it usually is, since there's so much ground to cover in so little time ... But taking the movie solely on its own merits, it was a very affecting film. Great performances.
Lily Taylor is an all-time favorite. ... There's so much that doesn't get said, I kept waiting for the climactic cathartic moment, and was disappointed when it didn't happen, but looking back, it works in that it definitely leaves you thinking.
... I did wonder whether it hit me simply because of the male wish fulfillment fantasy of it (albeit in subtle ways), but I can only judge by me.
