Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by Dustin G — 01 Jan 2009
This is a movie for those who love literature. I mean really love it. The popular, well known classic novelists and the more obscure but no less meaningful classic novelists.
I'm not a huge literary fan. I like to read and always have at least one book on the go, but in no way am I a passionate literary fan. I am, however, a huge fan of Frank Langella. Huge fan. It's a shame he hasn't had more leading roles than in the last couple of years. He is such a huge talent. I know there were a lot of great performances last year, but it's still at least a little baffling that he wasn't nominated for an Oscar for this role, he's so good. I also loved Lili Taylor, who is just delightful as Langella's daughter.
The relationship that develops between Langella's novelist and his mid-20's biographer sways between touching and uncomfortable and more or less inappropriate.
It's a slow moving film, taking it's time telling its story, but rushing this material would ruin its effect. So I applaud its pace. Great film.
