Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by Albert G — 07 Feb 2009
This "independent/art-movie" genre is not for everyone; I can handle only the occasional one. As expected, it's a deep plot simply told with a handful of characters, and masterfully performed by actors both young and old.
If you are interested in stories about has-beens becoming revitalized by the beauty and enthusiasm of a young stranger, this is for you. (I was drawn mainly by Lauren Ambrose being in the cast.) I did get caught up in the story of the writer's resulting painful self-rediscovery.
I knocked off one star because the lustful turn of the relationship bothered me and seemed unnecessary. The father-daughter story I found more endearing. The resolution is satisfying and simple.
