Review of Starting Out in the Evening (2007) by Marina R — 19 Mar 2009
The smell of books can permeate the best of intentions through the pulp that mends our thoughts, longings, desire and even adventure. Starting Out in the Evening examines one author's (Frank Langella) resolve to disallow his work to be degraded whether those works are out of print or not. That is beside the point. They are, in fact, the extension to his youth, his marriage, his child (Lili Taylor), his new lover, his life in its totality. His work will soon be challenged to a point of exasperation by a selfish grad student (Lauren Ambrose) preparing her thesis.
The story is poignant and poetry. A wonderful contribution by Lily Taylor who has her own personal turmoil to face including her father's disdain toward her complex relationship. That disdain melds in one of the most profound scenes of the boyfriend and helpless father that I have seen in a long time.
See it. You will not be disappointed.
