Review of Starter for 10 (2006) by Caleb C — 01 Feb 2011
For Fans Of: James McAvoy, Rebecca Hall, Alice Eve, Rom-Com.
Date Night: Approved.
Art Factor: None.
Fun Factor: Low.
Emotional Factor: Low.
Intelligence Factor: Low.
Essential Viewing: No.
The Plot: In 1985, a clever boy from a working class family in England tries his hand at college, love, and a quiz team.
10 Quick Hits.
1) I don't know what the "professional" critics are smoking, but this movie is nowhere near an avg. 89% score.
2) The soundtrack is pretty awesome and if you are into 80s college radio stuff than I suggest you give it a check.
3) Alice Eve may not be one the best young actresses in the world, but my God(s) there is no denying that she is beautiful. Haters feel free to keep hating.
4) Rebecca Hall may be one of the best young actresses in the world, and my God(s) she is beautiful. Haters, continue.
5) Director Tom Vaughan managed to provide a very boring presence with the look of the film. Nice work.
6) I wonder what this film could have been if producer Sam Mendes would have directed?
7) James McAvoy gives a well rounded performance. By well rounded I mean no edge at all with no danger of hurting a fly. Seriously though, he does play a father in law's wet dream.
8) This was my first time seeing actor Dominic Cooper and knowing who he was going into it. I don't see it yet.
9) The script was way better than most rom-coms, particularly those that take place anywhere near a college campus.
10) The cast as a whole have very nice screen rapor that really shines.
Final Thought: Don;t let the 60% say the wrong thing to you, this is a good little flick, there just isn't much that stands out. If you happen to be a huge fan of any of the involved parties you might find yourself really loving this flick.
