Review of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008) by Jason D — 09 Aug 2008

I must say that all the cards were stacked up for this film to be superbly awesome, thanks in part to the franchise's writer, Ed Neumeier, not only returning but taking over directing duties for this.

We also see the return of Rico himself, Casper Van Dien, as well as the overall format and theme of the first Starship Troopers (which part 2 abandoned for a more horror toned film). However, a huge dip in terrible CG effects made the battles and war scenes sometimes hard to watch, though the space and ship scenes still looked good, as well as the always reliable visual effects.

Also, we lose that classic purposely corny acting that reminisced the 50's era and gain actual bad acting from many who posed moreso as morons rather than actors. Still, a lot of that same feeling is captured as the bugs grow smarter and direct their efforts to finding the main space station by means of infiltrating their top leader and convincing him that this giant uber-bug is god.

Yes, religion is incorporated in this one and everyone is made to look the fool, from the ever-so-silly Christians to the non-religious folk. The story arch is a bit corny and took away from the film a lot, but for those who came to be entertained and not given good plot and storytelling, do not worry.

There are some perky titties and some good gore effects during battles. One fun part I will say that I enjoyed was the re-introduction of the brain bug that was captured in the first film, which was featured in a small but great scene in the film.

Overall, kind of a disappointment (Oh yeah, why call it Marauder if the Marauder program is only featured in the film for a whopping minute and a half?!?!), but still a moderately fun watch. I say what the hell, might as well make some more ST films.
