Review of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008) by Jonathan P — 15 Feb 2012
Come on, there are a lot of generic sci-fi films for everyday viewing, right? Definitely. But Starship Troopers was different, standing above those generics by bringing in a darkly entertaining bug smashing time.
After the disappointing second installment, Starship Troopers 3 attempts to take the series back to what the first film existed as: a dark comedy, with a twist of sci-fi action. Only Marauder succeeds as more of a sequel than it's predecessor.
.. and beats out earning a generic standing. What needs to be mentioned is that this success stands by only a small margin. What makes this film "okay" is the absurdity of it all. Small bizarre occurrences combine with random news shorts (as seen in the first one) to cause a higher entertainment factor.
To conclude, Starship Troopers 3 is an interesting direct to video film, but cannot tower firmly next to the higher budged first installment. The solution to Hollywood's lack of recent solid sci-fi entertainment? A reasonably budgeted Starship Troopers 4 in responsible hands.
Well, better another Starship than another Japanese horror remake at least. America needs more Johnny Rico.
