Review of Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004) by Jordan R — 28 Jun 2009
The original Starship Troopers was about excess: ships, bugs and people exploding, and campy humor. This movie is an epic failure in that it has only one of these elements. The movie can be summed up as follows: Intro- low budget action. Middle- lame Species remake. Ending- mediocrity.
This movie is just not very good. It lacks the hilarious bits that really made the first and third ones enjoyable and the action is barely present. This is likely partly due to a lack of budget. If you can?t make a movie what it?s supposed to be then don?t bother.
It begins, as you would expect with a little bug attack. However, it does not really show the bugs all that often during this sequence and seems to focus on people shooting and making constipated facial expressions in front of a shaky camera. This is okay as long as it picks up, but it never does. In fact it slows down.
While the acting is slightly better then the first (due to the oddly more serious nature of this one). This in itself takes away from the ridiculous humor and it goes off into a weird, "oh the aliens want to have sex with us so they can put bugs inside us!" This is probably due to the lack of budget. Even the bug insertions bits are done with kisses were we don't see the bugs going in most of the time.
The point is if you?re going to do Starship Troopers do it right. This whole movie obviously had less of a budget then one episode of Battlestar Galactica and it shows.
