Review of Starship Troopers (1997) by Kevin G — 29 Oct 2010
I really can't help but love this. It's signature Paul Verhoeven, which means gleefully over-the-top and sarcastic. It's very much in the tradition of Robocop with all of it's fake commercials and radical war propaganda.
What's interesting is it manages to maintain it's extremely cynical nature, while also having us generally root for it's heroes. It's also weird how much I enjoy the effects in this, clearly it's dated at this point, but something about it still seems really cool and fun to me.
It's not just that the CGI looks kind of endearingly corny, but in a way I feel like it still gets to be really creative with the conceptual designs of the different insects. Not to mention it's got some hot actresses and a ton of outrageously gory action.
There really is just so much to be entertained by here, the whole time I had a big, fat grin on my face.
