Review of Starship Troopers (1997) by J.b. R — 10 Jan 2013
Another satirical masterpiece from Paul Verhoeven. What makes this film so amazing (much in the same way that "Robocop" worked so perfectly) is the balance of satire and entertainment. Verhoeven is at his best here with huge set pieces and tons of sci-fi gore.
The casting is perfect and the writing helps the film work on multiple levels of enjoyment from visceral to intellectual. As always, Verhoeven is concerned with the fascist tendencies of thinking on both sides of the isle and by projecting this into the future, he is able to critique our current culture as well as the culture in the novel on which the film was based.
Incredible work and one of the greatest sci-fi pictures of all time.
