Review of Starship Troopers (1997) by Spencer S — 08 Feb 2015
It's hard to exactly say why Starship Troopers works, since it's such a strange film. Not that it's hard to follow, the plot is relatively straightforward, the characters are simple (even insultingly simple) but it's rather that Starship Troopers is many things.
It's a science fiction film, a war movie, a black comedy, a serious drama, a splatter-fest, a fake propaganda film, an action flick, a B-movie but above all it is a biting social, military, and political satire while being all of the things it satires.
It glorifies as much as it insults, it's a film that's so full of strange conflict that it's actually impossible not to enjoy. Some great actors were thrown into the mix (Clancy Brown, Michael Ironside, as well as Dean Norris and Neil Patrick Harris coming in for small, enjoyable roles).
It had some great effects, some bad effects, great action and some gloriously bloody deaths. Starship Troopers brings so much into it, and though it's not always exactly a success, it's so entertaining and so much fun seeing it all happen it's impossible not to appreciate one's viewership.
