Review of Starred Up (2014) by David W — 25 Aug 2014
Probably going for the record number of incidences of the f and c word possible in a movie of an hour and three quarters... It's gritty, feels like an authentic prison, violent, with hard dialogue, you know what I mean bruv, fam, blood, innit? Like so much pent up violence and threat waiting to explode.
Eric Love (note the irony) is a psychopathic young offender - starred up! Ie really violent and nasty because he was abandoned by his dad, put into care, fiddled with by a kiddy fiddler but at the age of 10 got his revenge with boiling water and sugar.
And now he's in jail with his Dad (who's shacked up with his cell mate "it's prison innit?" It sure is. It moves along but when the thing is over you begin to realise that it's all a lot of meaningless nonsense.
The most ridiculous and unbelievable character is Oliver - who runs a therapy group. Upper class volunteer - sent to boarding school - well that's a bit like nick isn't it? So he works with bloods and cons and it's just not believable.
Worse than all this is that there is no moral to take from it..what is it saying?
