Review of Starman (1984) by Evan B — 06 Jul 2011
Action and horror were covered in previous works of his, and now Carpenter is doing Starman, a film which is maverick in every way. This is a drama. This is a comedy. This is science fiction. Not sci-fi, but science fiction (Harlan Ellison's seperation of the terms is what I am using).
We have fleshed out characters which not only let us relate but also see into different things with the human condition: see the good and bad of humanity from many viewpoints (like the viewpoint of "the other" or the viewpoint of one guy who has rubbed the other guy the wrong way ending in a bar brawl).
We also have some pondering on the concept of world peace and how it might actualy be a bad thing. Of course, though Carpenter wouldn't win any wards, Bridges took home a nomination which would be something he would finaly have when he does True Grit 26 years later.
