Review of Starman (1984) by Grant S — 12 Dec 2013
This is an immensely pleasing movie. Jeff Bridges is very convincing in this most unusual role of an alien made of light who takes the form of the dead husband of Jenny Hayden, played also completely convincingly by Karen Allen.
What follows after their first encounter is a road movie of sorts, but one that is full of heart and irresistible charm, and action as they are pursued by the government and pretty much all of it's might.
With perfect pacing there are a couple scenes that show just how powerful the starman is that are played beautifully, they never feel overblown for the sake of adding mindless movie action and tension, but they are very effective and allow room in this fantasy sci-fi for a surprisingly touching love story.
In fact it's hard to tell if it's a sci-fi first or a love story first, but either way both aspects shine brighter in this movie than either aspect does in movies that are just sci-fi or just love story.
On top of that is the incredible score which moves from grand, mind expanding, epic goodness to tender, haunting beauty, and all done with what could all too easily have sounded like cheesey synths. You will laugh, you will cry, you will love Starman.
