Before I say anything else at all, this is one of those movies that you're not going to understand unless you're familiar with the series. It ties in with the storyline from the TV series so much that you wouldn't understand anything that's going on, or even the premise of the movie without being familiar with the series storyline.

That aside, it's a fairly well done movie, in that it entertains you for a long period of time. It deals with Earth's Stargate team finding an ancient artifact called the Ark of Truth, that, when opened by and viewed by a prior, will convince him and those that are near him that the gods he follows are in fact ascended beings, and aren't really gods at all.

A little back-story on that is that the earth is facing an enemy called the Ori. They are a race of ascended beings that trick people into worshiping them. The worship somehow translates into greater power for them, so they avidly seek more worshipers through proselytizing and forceful conversion. The Stargate team has to find a way to stop them or the Earth will be conquered by these alien religious fanatics.

Along the way there is backstabbing and plenty of shoot-out action scenes. One of the older foes, the Replicators, are revived temporarily for this movie too.

If you're familiar with the Stargate series storyline and want more Stargate action, then watching this film will be highly entertaining for you. If you've never seen or heard of Stargate, I'd recommend starting at the beginning. The series was inspired by a movie called Stargate, and picks up where that movie leaves off. Just as a guess, I would say that this second movie occurs somewhere around the 8th season of the show. There is another, third movie as well called The Continuum. The series progresses rather rapidly with lots of plot twists, character development and action. One thing that really appeals to me about it is that actual Earth history is tied into the series to lend the ideas credit and keep it interesting.

If you enjoy sci-fi give Stargate a shot!
